Welcome to the Madness ☘️

Adult Irish Dance Classes in Cockburn
Irish dancers, teachers, adjudicators, examiners, parents and students all agree on one thing:
You've got to be a little bit mad to get involved.
If you've found yourself here, there's a good chance you've seen Irish dancing somewhere and thought:
"That looks fun."
Maybe it was Riverdance.Maybe it was a performance at a festival.Maybe a friend or family member used to dance.Maybe you simply stumbled across one of our classes and became curious.
Whatever brought you here, welcome.
Irish dance is energetic, challenging, rewarding and occasionally completely ridiculous.
One day you're learning a few skips and side steps.
Before long you're trying to remember the difference between a reel, a light jig, a single jig, a slip jig, a heavy jig and a hornpipe.
Then somehow you're discussing shoe buckles, poodle socks, sock glue, wigs, dress fittings and whether the hem needs to come up another 2 millimetres.
Don't worry.
We all started somewhere.
Welcome to the madness. ☘️

So... What Actually Is Irish Dance?

Irish dance is all about rhythm, timing, coordination and footwork.
Most people recognise it from shows like Riverdance, but Irish dance actually includes several different styles, from graceful soft shoe dances such as reels and slip jigs through to the powerful rhythms of hard shoe dancing.
At SoaR, we focus on creating a welcoming environment where complete beginners can learn the foundations of Irish dance while having fun and challenging themselves along the way.
Don't worry if you don't know the difference between a reel, a jig or a hornpipe yet.
Most dancers don't when they start. ☘️

What Will I Learn?

Irish dance is built around a collection of traditional dances, each with its own rhythm, character and style.
Irish Soft Shoe
Light, fast and precise.
Most beginners start here, learning dances such as:
• Reels• Light Jigs• Slip Jigs
Each dance has its own unique rhythm and feel, helping dancers develop balance, coordination, timing and technique.
Irish Hard Shoe
Loud, rhythmic and percussive.
Hard shoe dancing uses specialised shoes to create sound and rhythm, similar to tap dancing.
Dancers learn:
• Hornpipes• Heavy Jigs• Traditional Set Dances
As dancers progress, they begin learning not only the steps, but also the rhythms, melodies and musical characteristics that make each dance unique.
Whether you're dancing a reel, a jig, a hornpipe or a traditional set, every dance tells a slightly different story through movement and music.

How are Classes Structured?

We've divided our Irish dance programme into smaller, focused classes to make it easier for dancers to learn at their own pace and focus on the areas that interest them most.

Irish Soft Shoe Skills & Drills

Build the foundations of Irish dance through technique, coordination, balance, timing and footwork.

Irish Soft Shoe Dances

Apply those skills to traditional Irish soft shoe dances such as reels, light jigs and slip jigs.

Tap & Hard Shoe Skills & Drills

Irish Hard Shoe Dances & Traditional Sets

Apply your hard shoe skills to heavy jigs, hornpipes and traditional set dances.
Attend a single class or stay for the entire evening.
The choice is yours.

Complete Beginner? ☘️

Perfect.
Most adults who start Irish dance with us have never done Irish dance before.
You do not need experience.
You do not need special shoes.
You do not need to know the difference between a reel, a jig or a hornpipe.
That's what we're here for.
What should I wear?
Comfortable activewear you can move in.
Do I need Irish dance shoes?
No.
Most beginners start in comfortable runners before deciding whether Irish dance is something they'd like to continue.
What should I bring?
• Water bottle• Small towel• A sense of humour
Is Irish dance athletic?
Yes.
But don't let that scare you.
At SoaR we teach using a "walking to dancing" approach.
We often begin with simple walking patterns and gradually build them into skips, springs, changes, side steps and other Irish dance movements.
Before long you'll be dancing without even realising how much you've learned.
The goal isn't to throw you in the deep end.
The goal is to help you build confidence one step at a time.

Not Sure Where You Fit?

Hi, I'm Charlie.
One of the things I love most about Irish dance is the variety of people it attracts.
Some students have never danced before.
Some come from ballet.
Some come from tap.
Some danced as children and are returning years later.
Some simply saw Riverdance and thought:
"That looks fun."
If you're not sure where to start, have questions about classes, or simply want to chat before booking, feel free to reach out.
No pressure.
No silly questions.
Just send me a message and I'll happily help point you in the right direction. ☘️
