Irish Dancing
Irish Céilí and Step Dancing
Irish Dance is Irelands traditional dance style that originated somewhere between the 7th and 8th Century. It's most well known by the touring Irish Performance Company "Riverdance" and Michael Flatleys "Lord of the Dance" and has signature movements and themes around quick and precisie footwork with a focus on creating different rhythmic beats. Fast and big jumps, with spins and high legs are common, all whilst keeping the upper body rigid and free from movements. There are sub categories of Irish dancing including Irish Step Dancing performed on one's own, that incorporates Traditional Choreography as well as modernised own-choreographic patterns; Social or Céilí (meaning celebration) Dances performed in groups, most of which have traditional choreography that dates back generations. Traditional Hard shoe set dances have also been around for centuries including St Patricks Day, Garden of Daisies, Job of the Journeywork and many more.
At SoaR Dance Studio our classes will start with the absolute basics beginning with the recognition of different musical Irish Tunes such as Reel, Light Jig and Slip Jig. The first movements we learn will be soft shoe dancing and learning to dance with a partner and as students progress they will then adopt Solo Step Dancing. As they progress further they will adopt the traditional "Hard Shoe" that famously identifies the cultural art; upon which students will be introduced to Heavy Jigs and Hornpipes and begin learning the traditional set dances before learning own-choreography Advanced "Modern" Set Dances alongside Advanced Soft Shoe Dances.
